Odisha steps up efforts to restore Brahmapur water supply after cyclone Arnab
The state government is working to fix the Janivili Intake while deploying tankers to meet the city's water needs.
The Odisha government is implementing emergency measures to return water services to normal in Brahmapur after cyclone Arnab, according to Odisha Bytes. Officials stated that work to repair the Janivili Intake is being carried out on a war footing.
Currently, 70 MLD is being supplied against the city's daily requirement of 90 MLD. This supply consists of 64 MLD from surface water and 6 MLD from 15 mobilised production wells. To assist affected areas, 20 tankers, including 12 private ones, have been deployed.
To ensure water safety, treatment plants are using pre-chlorination at 4 ppm and post-chlorination at 10 ppm. Tail-end distribution zones are receiving 2 ppm chlorination. Water supply in Gopalpur and Hinjilikatu is reported to be functioning smoothly.
Workers began constructing a sandbag barrier across Connecticut Nala at 5 AM on November 1 to restrict water flow and allow for intake repairs. The project involves 120 labourers, three excavators, and two tractors, with a goal of placing approximately 20,000 sandbags.
The restoration process is being monitored by Usha Padhee, Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Department, Arindam Dakua, Director of Municipal Administration, and Debabrata Mohanty, Managing Director of WATCO. Once the water flow is restricted, cleaning and repairs at the Janivili Intake will begin.
