Kochi to host global symposium on changing oceans from Wednesday
Experts from 30 countries will gather at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute to discuss sustainable fisheries and satellite technology.
Marine scientists, policymakers, and technologists from 30 countries will assemble at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in Kochi for a three-day symposium starting Wednesday, November 4. According to BusinessLine, the international TREVOR-SAFARI symposium will focus on how climate research and satellite technologies can address environmental challenges to protect fisheries and ocean ecosystems.
The event will explore topics including marine biodiversity, water quality, and changing ocean conditions. A major focus will be placed on using underwater monitoring and satellite-based observations to study ocean productivity, fish distribution, and sea surface temperature.
CMFRI Director Grinson George said the discussions will focus on better understanding ocean conditions and improving environmental monitoring to ensure seafood security and the long-term well-being of coastal livelihoods.
The symposium will also examine how to strengthen the resilience of fishing communities against extreme weather events and shifting monsoon patterns. Technical sessions will cover the role of women and marginalised communities, as well as the blending of traditional fishing knowledge with modern science.
A special session sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) will focus on the One Health approach regarding remote sensing for aquatic ecosystem health. The symposium is jointly organised by the Department of Chemical Oceanography of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Trevor Platt Science Foundation, CMFRI, and the Marine Biological Association of India.
