SCCL introduces facial recognition attendance system in Kothagudem Area pilot project

Workers and trade union leaders have expressed opposition to the new technology, alleging it prioritises systems over essential production tools.

Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) introduced a facial recognition-based attendance system on a trial basis in its Kothagudem Area on Monday, according to The Hindu. The pilot project aims to enhance transparency, discipline, and punctuality among employees across coal mines and departments.

The company has approximately 40,000 employees, with about 1,600 working in the Kothagudem Area. While biometric systems are used at some General Managers’ offices, this is the first time the technology is being implemented across an entire area. SCCL plans to extend the system to other areas in a phased manner.

However, workers and trade union leaders are opposing the decision. Telangana Boggu Ghani Karmika Sangham State general secretary Kapu Krishna told Telangana Today that a similar system introduced 15 years ago failed. He questioned the necessity of the system if manway clerks, who currently manage muster rolls, are simply assigned other roles at the same location.

CITU Kothagudem area branch secretary V Srinivas alleged that the management is prioritising systems unrelated to production over essential equipment. He stated that a lack of drill bits, spare parts, shovels, dumpers, and dozers is causing a decline in production and threatening worker safety.

Union leaders also alleged that representative unions AITUC and INTUC have failed to oppose these policies. In response, an official stated that the company prioritises safety measures and alleged that union leaders do not speak about safety issues during the annual safety week.
