Delhi CM vows to preserve city heritage on Foundation Day

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said her government is resolved to keep the city's identity intact while ensuring a prosperous future.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta greeted citizens on Sunday to mark Delhi Foundation Day, stating her government aims to preserve the city's identity and heritage. According to The Pioneer, Gupta expressed a resolve to ensure the city has a future that matches its past.

The Chief Minister noted that Delhi was granted the status of a Union Territory on November 1, 1956. She described the city as a treasure trove of history that has witnessed various ages, from the saga of Indraprastha to modern India.

Gupta stated on X that the government intends to ensure prosperity in every lane and modern amenities in every home. She added that the city's heritage will flourish as its development reaches new heights.

The Foundation Day marks the date in 1956 when the States Reorganisation Act abolished Delhi's assembly and council of ministers. This reclassification brought the city under the direct administration of the President of India through a chief commissioner.

Delhi previously functioned as a Part-C state with an elected government starting in 1951 under Chief Minister Chaudhary Brahm Prakash. The States Reorganisation Commission recommended the change in 1955, arguing the national capital could not hold the same status as other states.
