Woman with disability dies in Korattur apartment fire

A 48-year-old woman died in a fire at her Periyar Nagar home while her husband and son sustained burns.

A 48-year-old woman with a disability died in a fire at her apartment in Periyar Nagar, Korattur, in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026, according to The Hindu.

The deceased, identified as Akila, was asleep in the house when the fire broke out. Her husband, 55-year-old Ramani, and their son, 25-year-old Karthik, sustained burns while attempting to escape.

Preliminary information suggests that an air-conditioner and a refrigerator exploded as the fire spread through the house. The family reportedly tried to flee after the refrigerator exploded.

Korattur police suspect an electrical short circuit may have triggered the fire. An investigation is currently underway to establish the exact cause of the incident.

Residents alleged that the locality experiences erratic power supply with frequent fluctuations between low and high voltage. The police noted that such accidents can often be attributed to improper maintenance of electrical appliances.
