US senators demand answers from Google CEO on classroom AI use

Senators Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley have sent nine questions to Sundar Pichai regarding the impact of AI on students.

US Senators Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley have written to Google CEO Sundar Pichai seeking information about the company's AI tools in schools. The senators sent the letter following an investigation into how these products affect the educational development and mental health of children.

The senators claimed that Google is pushing AI products into classrooms across the country and stated that children are paying the price. They expressed concern that the promotion of these tools threatens the academic success and wellbeing of students.

In the letter, the senators cited a Wall Street Journal report involving interviews with teachers, parents, students, and clinicians. They noted that national test scores have declined and that some students struggle with critical thinking or independent work since AI was introduced.

The senators asked nine specific questions, including what research Google has conducted on the potential negative impacts of Gemini and AI Overviews on children's mental health. They also requested details on promotional programs and the amount of money spent on expanding AI adoption in schools.

The correspondence includes questions regarding whether Google's tools have encouraged harmful behaviour or emotional dependence in minors. The senators have set a deadline of November 2, 2026, for the company to respond to their queries.
