Centre to reconsider Rs 900 crore for Tamil Nadu minority schemes

Minorities Welfare Minister A.M. Shahjahan said the Union government has agreed to review 374 pending welfare schemes for the state.

The Union government has agreed to reconsider the sanction and release of Rs 900 crore for 374 pending minority welfare schemes in Tamil Nadu, according to the Deccan Chronicle.

Minorities Welfare Minister A.M. Shahjahan told reporters in Tiruchy on Saturday that he recently met Union Minister of Minorities Affairs Kiren Rijiju in New Delhi to urge the release of these funds for infrastructure and educational schemes.

Shahjahan also requested an increase in the Haj pilgrimage quota for Tamil Nadu, noting that 13,000 people applied while only 5,500 were selected. He said Rijiju assured him he would look into the matter.

The minister urged the Centre to implement the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) in full swing in Tamil Nadu, similar to its implementation in Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.

Shahjahan further appealed for the implementation of Rajindar Sachar Committee recommendations, which include increasing Muslim employment and recognising Madrasa degrees for defence, civil, and banking examinations.

Regarding state efforts, Shahjahan said Tamil Nadu has allocated Rs 20 crore for undergraduate tuition fees for Muslim female students and Rs 100 crore for an interest-free revolving fund managed through the Waqf Board.
