New cyclone in Bay of Bengal threatens Andhra Pradesh coast
The India Meteorological Department expects the system to become a severe cyclonic storm by November 2 before making landfall.
A new cyclone is intensifying over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to hit the Andhra Pradesh coastline, according to India Today.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that a deep depression over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal may develop into a cyclonic storm within six hours. The system is projected to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by November 2.
At 8:30 am on Sunday, November 1, the system was located approximately 710 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, 710 km east-southeast of Nellore, and 630 km east-southeast of Chennai. It has been moving west-northwestwards at about 20 kmph.
The IMD forecast suggests the storm will likely cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur by the morning of November 3. At the time of landfall, the system could have sustained wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph.
The weather system follows the remnants of Cyclone Arnab, which swept across central India less than a week ago. The approaching storm could cause damage to houses, uproot trees, and disrupt electricity and communication networks.
