Quad is building open supply chains and securing critical minerals, says Rubio

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US, India, Japan, and Australia are delivering results for the Indo-Pacific region.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States, India, Japan, and Australia are building reliable and open supply chains and securing critical minerals. According to The Indian Express, Rubio made these remarks on X during the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta.

Rubio met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on the sidelines of the meeting. This follows the third Quad ministerial meeting in less than six months, after previous gatherings in New Delhi in May and Manila in July.

The ministers reiterated a commitment to building trusted and resilient infrastructure and reliable global supply chains. They expressed concerns regarding non-market policies and economic coercion, including arbitrary export restrictions that result in overcapacity to disrupt critical industries.

The group welcomed a US commitment to provide $10 million to promote infrastructure in India and ASEAN countries to recover critical minerals from waste. They also expressed intent to provide over $85 million of technical and financial assistance for initiatives like Pax Silica and AI.

Regarding maritime security, the ministers highlighted the necessity to protect navigational rights and freedoms in the Red Sea, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. They also announced the first-ever Quad Business Leaders’ Forum to foster public and private sector ties.
