Tamil Nadu to stop mineral truck permits without GPS devices
The state geology and mining department announced that trucks without AIS 140-compliant GPS devices will face seizure and criminal action.
The Tamil Nadu geology and mining department announced on Saturday that it will stop issuing transport permits and transit passes to mineral-carrying trucks without AIS 140-compliant GPS devices from November 1.
According to The New Indian Express, the extended deadline to install these devices and link them to the department’s online Mineral Management System (MIMAS) portal ended on October 31.
The department stated that the requirement to install GPS devices and integrate them with the MIMAS portal was intended to prevent unauthorised transportation and illegal quarrying.
Vehicles carrying minerals without valid permits and GPS devices will be inspected and seized, the department said. It added that criminal action would be initiated against the owners of such vehicles.
The original deadline for fitting the GPS devices was March 31, 2026. The government had previously planned to stop issuing transit passes from September 1, but extended the compliance deadline to September 30 and then to October 31.
