LCA Mk-1A and stealth fighter are top priorities, says new IAF chief

Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit aims to restore combat strength through indigenisation and the induction of new aircraft.

Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, the new Chief of the Air Staff, said on Sunday that restoring the Indian Air Force's combat strength is his foremost task. According to the Hindustan Times, Dixit aims to address the shortage of fighter aircraft by focusing on indigenisation.

The new chief identified the Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA) Mk-1A, LCA Mk-2, and the fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) as the backbone of the modernisation drive. He stated that the IAF will fight with Indian solutions and maintain enough numbers to meet operational demands.

Dixit outlined his vision using the acronym VAYU, which stands for vigilance and readiness, atmanirbharta (self-reliance), yukti (ingenuity), and unity of effort. He noted that the IAF will plan and fight alongside the army, navy, and other national agencies.

The IAF is working to increase its fighter squadron numbers, which have fallen to 30 against a sanctioned strength of 42.5. The induction of the LCA Mk-1A, which is expected to enter service by year-end, is an immediate priority to replace retired MiG-21s.

The chief also highlighted the need for innovation in areas such as AI-enabled command and control, layered counter-drone defence, and the use of near-space as an operational domain. He noted that technologies like drones and long-range precision weapons are reshaping warfare.
