Karnataka government to consider official status for Kannada flag

Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said the state will discuss a legal framework to hoist the flag alongside the national flag.

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said on Sunday that the state government intends to grant official recognition to the red and yellow Kannada flag. Speaking during Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations in Bengaluru, Shivakumar stated the government aims to establish a legal framework to allow the flag to be flown with the national flag on government buildings.

According to a report by Deccan Herald, the Chief Minister said the matter would be discussed during the upcoming legislature session in Belagavi. He noted that while the Cabinet had previously requested recognition from the Union government, no acknowledgement was received.

Shivakumar expressed that an official state flag would represent the self-respect of Kannadigas, similar to the state anthem. He said the flag conveys the culture, religious harmony, and knowledge tradition of Karnataka.

The winter session of the Legislative Assembly is scheduled to take place at the Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi from November 30 to December 11. Shivakumar intends to bring the proposal for a Cabinet decision during this period.

The state formation day, Karnataka Rajyotsava, is celebrated annually on November 1 to mark the 1956 unification of Kannada-speaking regions.
