Karnataka considering official recognition of Kannada flag, says Shivakumar
Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said the proposal will be discussed during the upcoming Winter Session of the legislature in Belagavi.
The Karnataka government is considering the official recognition of the Kannada flag, according to a report by The Hindu on Sunday. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that the matter will be discussed during the Winter Session of the legislature in Belagavi, which is scheduled to begin on November 30.
Shivakumar said the government intends to issue an order allowing private institutions to fly the flag. He added that the state is also looking into making the hoisting of the Kannada flag mandatory in institutions supported by the government.
The Chief Minister noted that a previous proposal had been submitted to the Centre but was turned down by the Ministry of Home Affairs. He said legal experts have been consulted to explore ways to recognise the flag without violating rules regarding the national flag.
In 2018, the government under former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah approved a horizontal tricolour flag featuring a yellow, white, and red design with the Gandaberunda insignia. Shivakumar said the government is working towards legislation to allow the state flag to be flown alongside the national flag.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that the state will organise programmes over the next year to promote the Kannada language. He said the government would issue an order this month to permit private institutions to fly the flag.
