India coal imports fall 5.83 per cent in August

Coal imports dropped to 104.57 million tonnes in August due to higher domestic production and lower overseas shipments, according to The Hindu.

India's total coal imports decreased by 5.83 per cent in August compared to the same month last year, according to government data reported by The Hindu.

The country imported 104.57 million tonnes of coal during August, down from 111.05 million tonnes in the previous year.

The Union Coal Ministry stated that the drop in imports, especially for use at domestic coal-based power plants, highlights the need to improve domestic production, supply chains, and transport infrastructure.

Imports by domestic coal-based power plants, used for blending, fell 35.23 per cent to 3 million tonnes. However, imports for thermal power plants running solely on imported coal rose by approximately 1 per cent to 18.31 million tonnes.

The power sector's total coal imports declined by about 6.4 per cent. The share of imported coal in India's total consumption fell to 19.3 per cent in August from 21.2 per cent last year.

Coking coal imports, used by the steel industry, declined about 4.2 per cent to 27.3 million tonnes. India relies on imports for 95 per cent of its coking coal needs.
