Government approves next-generation stealth destroyer programme for Indian Navy

The ₹80,000 crore Project 18A aims to develop advanced warships with 75 per cent indigenous content.

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has granted in-principle approval for a new programme to build futuristic stealth-guided missile destroyers, according to The Hindu.

A senior Defence Ministry official stated that the project, estimated at approximately ₹80,000 crore, aims to equip the warships with advanced sensors, weapons, and technologies.

The programme is intended to counter maritime security challenges from China and Pakistan, as both nations are increasing their underwater warfare capabilities. The official noted that China is expanding its naval presence in the Indian Ocean Region while Pakistan is strengthening its submarine fleet.

The new vessels will be designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and are expected to surpass the capabilities of Visakhapatnam-class destroyers. They are likely to feature improved air defence, enhanced firepower, and sophisticated surveillance and anti-submarine warfare systems.

The official added that the warships should contain nearly 75 per cent indigenous content. Both private sector companies and defence public sector undertakings will be able to participate in the competitive bidding process.

Delivery of these ships is anticipated to start between five and 10 years after the signing of the contract. The move comes as several existing Indian Navy destroyers are scheduled for decommissioning in the coming years.
