Rockstar developed 600,000 animations for GTA 6 NPCs, report says
The studio used a personalised approach to give characters in Leonida distinct identities and behaviours instead of relying on procedural generation.
Rockstar has developed approximately 600,000 animations to enhance the realism of non-playable characters (NPCs) in Grand Theft Auto 6, according to a report by Hindustan Times.
The game is scheduled for release on Thursday, November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
To create the population of Leonida, Rockstar worked with a Los Angeles-based team of writers, directors and producers to provide individual characters with distinct identities.
Pedestrians in Vice City have been assigned personality traits that influence their reactions based on temperament, aggression, surroundings and player interactions.
Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North, said the team considered how characters might react in different situations, such as becoming hostile or reaching for weapons.
Rockstar North head of development Aaron Garbut stated the studio was unwilling to take shortcuts or compromise on scale, detail, interactivity or the open world.
