Bihar CM asks affluent taxpayers to forgo free electricity benefit
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary requested wealthy households to voluntarily surrender 125 units of free power to support state development.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Sunday requested financially stable citizens and income taxpayers to voluntarily decline the 125 units of free electricity provided by the state. Speaking at the Pataliputra National Youth Parliament-2.0 in Patna, Choudhary suggested that these individuals could donate the equivalent subsidy amount to the government to aid Bihar's development.
According to reports by India Today and Prabhat Khabar, the state government spends approximately Rs 23,000 crore annually on power subsidies. Choudhary noted that the expenditure per household ranges between Rs 8,000 and Rs 10,000. He stated that about 1.90 crore families currently benefit from the scheme.
The Chief Minister suggested that the funds saved from such voluntary contributions could be used to strengthen the state's education system. He noted that while the subsidy provides relief to consumers, affluent families do not necessarily require the benefit.
Choudhary also addressed the youth, stating they have a vital role in protecting democracy and India's cultural heritage. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a developed India by 2047 and credited former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for his contributions to the state.
The event was attended by Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari, MP Shambhavi Choudhary, and youth parliament founder Sayan Kunal.
