Delhi approves 2,345 new posts for fire service

The cadre restructuring will increase the sanctioned strength of the Delhi Fire Service from 3,096 to 5,441.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has authorised the addition of 2,345 new positions within the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), according to reports by The Hindu, The Tribune and The Pioneer. This marks the first major cadre overhaul for the department since it was established in 1942.

The decision will raise the total sanctioned workforce from 3,096 to 5,441. New roles will be distributed across various levels, including Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Divisional Officer, Assistant Divisional Officer, Station Officer, Sub-Officer, Leading Fireman, Fire Operator, Peon and Gardener.

Chief Minister Gupta stated that the expansion is necessary to address challenges from Delhi's rising population, high-rise buildings, industrial sites and complex infrastructure. She noted that the department's duties now include accident response and emergency rescue operations in addition to extinguishing fires.

Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood said the restructuring would provide a stronger institutional foundation to help the service respond to emerging safety risks. He added that adequate manpower and a robust supervisory structure are essential for the Capital.

The DFS has grown from 186 personnel and four fire stations in 1942 to its current network of 71 stations. The department now covers an area of approximately 1,484 square kilometres.
