West Bengal government clears proposal for magic school in Kolkata
The West Bengal School of Magic, Illusion and Performing Arts aims to serve as a centre for training, archival preservation and tourism.
The West Bengal government has approved a proposal to establish the West Bengal School of Magic, Illusion and Performing Arts in Kolkata, according to Urban Acres.
A senior state government official said the chief minister cleared the proposal and the advisory committee will meet after the Pujas to prepare a detailed project report.
The planned institution is intended to train performers, provide access to archives of magic traditions in India and Bengal, and act as a tourist destination.
A state advisory committee has been formed, including magicians Joysri Sorcar and Maneka Sorcar, alongside representatives from various state departments.
Maneka Sorcar said the proposal originated from an idea associated with her father, P.C. Sorcar Junior, noting that magic is an important part of performing arts.
The project aims to support employment in creative fields such as costume design and lighting, with the government seeking to establish the school within three years.
