Kerala needs ₹26,074.17 crore to finish Jal Jeevan Mission works

The state requires additional Central and State-shared funds to complete rural tap connectivity projects by December 2028, according to the Water Resources department.

Kerala requires an additional ₹26,074.17 crore in Central and State-shared funds to finish remaining works under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) rural tap connectivity scheme, according to The Hindu.

Water Resources Minister Mons Joseph told the State Legislative Assembly in a written reply that all projects are expected to be finished by December 2028, depending on fund availability.

The state has spent ₹18,640.62 crore so far out of a total outlay of ₹44,714.79 crore for the scheme. The Central and State governments share the costs at a 50:50 ratio.

Union Jal Shakti Ministry data shows that only 55.24 per cent of JJM works have been completed in the state. Seven districts, including Kasaragod, Idukki, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Malappuram and Pathanamthitta, have not yet reached the halfway mark.

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) has been permitted to secure a ₹9,000 crore loan from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). The KWA has received ₹7,000 crore so far to meet the state's share.

The Water Resources department stated it will prioritise works that offer the most connections, higher revenue potential, and maximum water connections from completed projects.
