Two Punjab AAP MLAs resign after party releases candidate list
Sitting MLAs Chetan Singh Jouramajra and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra have left the party following the announcement of initial candidates for the 2027 elections.
Two sitting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs in Punjab have resigned from the party's primary membership after the release of the initial candidate list for the 2027 Assembly elections.
Chetan Singh Jouramajra, representing Samana, and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, representing Sanaur, both confirmed their departures to The Indian Express.
Pathanmajra stated that he had resigned and would provide further details at a later time. Jouramajra, a former Cabinet minister, said he had resigned because his heart was no longer in the party, describing the situation in Punjab as heartbreaking.
The resignations follow the party's appointment of Assembly halqa in-charges in those constituencies, which suggested the duo might be replaced as candidates. AAP leadership had released the names early to gain a tactical advantage for the upcoming polls.
Pathanmajra had previously criticised the Delhi leadership and is currently out on bail following an arrest in a rape case. Jouramajra was previously removed from his ministerial position in Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's Cabinet after a controversy involving Dr Raj Bahadur.
The exit of both members marks the first significant political fallout resulting from the AAP's candidate selection process in Punjab.
