DMK women's wing protests across Tamil Nadu over law and order
Protesters accused the ruling TVK government of failing to protect women and children while essential commodity prices rise.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Women’s Wing staged protests at district headquarters across Tamil Nadu on Saturday, October 31, 2026, according to The Hindu. The agitation targeted the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government over the rising cost of essential commodities and the alleged breakdown of law and order.
In north Chennai, DMK deputy general secretary and MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi led a protest near the Collectorate. Protesters carried sacks of rice and cans of cooking oil to highlight price increases, while holding placards regarding the safety of children and the state of law and order.
Ms. Karunanidhi alleged that the government has failed to ensure the safety of women and children. She accused members of the ruling party of being involved in abducting and selling children and claimed that reports of child trafficking have increased parental fears.
The DMK leader also criticised the rising prices of onions, tomatoes, rice, pulses, and cooking oil. She stated that rice and pulses had become twice as expensive, making it difficult for households to afford daily meals.
The protests also highlighted concerns regarding power outages and escalating violent crimes, including a daylight murder in Salem and a jailbreak in Theni district, as reported by the Deccan Chronicle. Former Ministers P.K. Sekarbabu and Poongothai Aladi Aruna participated in the agitation.
In south Chennai, the protest was led by DMK Women’s Wing leaders Vijaya Thayanban and Kanimozhi Somu.
