Centre removes petrol export duty and raises diesel and ATF levies

The Ministry of Finance has increased export duties on diesel and aviation turbine fuel while withdrawing the levy on petrol.

The central government has removed the special additional excise duty on petrol exports and increased levies on high-speed diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF), according to notifications from the Ministry of Finance. The revised rates became effective on October 31, the date they were published in the official Gazette, reports the Times of India.

Under the new rules, the duty on petrol exports has been reduced from Rs 2.5 per litre to nil. Meanwhile, the levy on high-speed diesel has risen to Rs 11.5 per litre from Rs 8.5 per litre. The duty on ATF exports has also increased from Rs 10.5 per litre to Rs 11 per litre.

The Department of Revenue issued these changes through separate excise notifications. The government stated that there is no change to the existing excise duty rates for petrol and diesel intended for domestic consumption.

These export duties were originally implemented on March 27, 2026, during the West Asia crisis to ensure petroleum products remained available in the domestic market. The government has been reviewing these rates every fortnight based on average international prices for crude oil, petrol, diesel, and ATF.

Prior to this latest update, the rates had been set at Rs 2.5 per litre for petrol, Rs 8.5 per litre for diesel, and Rs 10.5 per litre for ATF following an October 16 review.
